Sometimes we don't know where to start with art.

That's why I have a whole heap of these creative warm ups to help clients relax and begin making creative choices. I find that these kind of creative tools are less about the content and more about the process. In other words just sitting down for 5 minutes and doing them can feel good for anyone.

So why not give this little arty exercise a go next time you are feeling stressed out, anxious or if you find yourself overthinking.

What you will need:

  • A blank piece of paper any size or shape. I chose a small sketchbook to keep the size of the doodle art down but you do you.

  • A pen or drawing pencil

  • Some colouring pens or pencils (this is optional but I enjoy adding colour to these doodles so you might too).

Alrighty then, let's get started.

  1. Take a line for a walk - this is a phrase art therapists sometimes use to describe putting the tip of your pen/pencil down anywhere on your paper and then just freely moving it loosely and randomly across the page until you feel it has walked enough.

  2. Notice your breath and any thoughts that come to mind. Just notice and let them be.

  3. When you feel done just stop. Look at the random shapes you have just created. Aren't they weird and wonderful!

  4. Now for the slower bit. Draw curved lines inside some of the sections of your drawing. The curves slow things down. Feel free to bounce around the picture adding curved lines anywhere that you feel needs them.

  5. Next add small circles inside other sections. This is strangely soothing and satisfying. Stop whenever you feel done.

  6. Lastly, you can add different colours of your choosing to any sections that are still blank. You could also simply fill them in with black. It is entirely up to you.

  7. Admire your artwork. Then ask yourself...

What shall we call this doodle artwork? How did it feel to make it?

Did any thoughts or feelings arise?

Below are a couple of my doodles for the curious but yours will look uniquely yours.

Abstract art with colorful shapes in pastel hues, featuring black lines, stripes, and dots. The mood is playful and creative.
Doodle one
Abstract geometric drawing with black lines, filled with red, green, gold colors on white paper. Pen placed below the artwork.
Doodle two

I realise this is not Art therapy because I can't be there with you to reflect upon the process.

But these kinds of creative tools for relieving anxiety and nervousness are a nice place to start. Low stakes but engaging and self-directed. This can fit into anyone's day.

Tip: keep a sketchbook beside your bed or in your bag to access it easily during the day if you feel anxious.

If you enjoyed trying this you will be happy to hear that I have lots more of this kind of soothing creative exercise to share. So let me know if you'd be interested in the comments.

Until next time,

Stay creative

Ellen
