Essential art supplies for online art therapy

If you are starting Art therapy online I just want to say, good choice. Therapy will hopefully make all the difference to your life and I am proud of you.

The last thing I want you to be worrying about is which art supplies to bring with you to your sessions.

So I have lovingly put together a short but mighty list of basic art supplies to get you going.

You can thank me later by clicking the like button.

Before I unfurl the epic list of basic supplies, I want to explain one vital but sometimes forgotten thing.

Your sessions will contain some time to talk, some quieter moments and hopefully as it is Art therapy, there should be some art-making time.

I mention this because sometimes people do rock up to art therapy, without art supplies! I know, the shock, the horror!

This isn't a real problem, as you can just go grab something during the session.

However, it is easier to gather a few basics into a box before your sessions and have them to hand should you need them.

That way you don't have to rummage around in the bottom of bags or get the stress levels up drawing something with a lip balm.

Now for the list of beautiful basics which will be more than adequate to get you rolling.

1. Your classic pencil, an eraser and if you have one a sharpener might come in handy.

I know this is technically several items but I have combined them because they are small.

2. Paper

Any paper you have, large or small, preferably plain and white so your art can be seen clearly on screen. I suggest A4 white printer paper because it is cheap and perfectly sized for most occasions. It can also be stored away easily in your folder after each session.

3. A folder, file or some kind of safe place to store your creations away between sessions

The art you make in art therapy may be beautiful, but it is usually private and not for everyone to see. So stash it all together in a folder, away from the kids, pets, or anyone else. It should be your choice to show it to others rather than them stumbling upon it under a stack of unsorted mail.

It can also be really helpful to look back at your art with your therapist during a review. So keep them together, keep them safe.

Some people create their own folder with large cardstock.

Whatever seems best for you, is just perfect.

4. Colouring pens, markers, ballpoint or felt tips pens

These are so useful when attending online therapy sessions. They are affordable and most importantly they are vibrant and easy to see on screen. Raid your junk drawer or office desk and you will likely find a handful of great drawing tools for your art therapy sessions. Highlighters can work too.

Things to remember

Meaningful art can be made from basic tools.

There is no need to buy fancy or expensive art materials for coming to Art therapy.

Use what you already have in the house and what works for you.

You can always branch out and buy extra things as you feel the need.

Your therapist (hopefully me) will support you in whatever you prefer to use during the session.

The basics are good enough.

Bring yourself and the rest will follow.

I hope this helps.

Until we speak

take good care,

Ellen
